In previous articles, we have covered how to select and buy the proper DVD rack for your needs and home. In today's article I'm going to talk about how to use the most common style rack in your home. The most common form of rack that you will find with either be a wooden or metal DVD rack that is wall mounted or wall hung. The reason for that is because they offer the most versatility in not only how you use them, but where you can put them, and what capacities they hold. It's for those reasons that we will focus in on the DVD rack as the means of storage that you should be using in your home.

The DVD rack is really the most universal storage solution for your digital media. The reasons are varied but often have to do with the fact that DVD storage racks are so forgiving in terms of their usage and consumption of floor space. Most racks are wall mounted and therefore don't use much floor space at all. This is a great solution for people that live in apartments or that have less room to commit to home theater related storage. Okay, now let's move on to beginning the process of finding out which is the best way for you to use your new DVD storage rack. The first step will be to take an inventory of your current home theater room and the furniture that is currently within it. You will want to look at all of the surfaces and determine for yourself if the room is dominated by a lot of vertical surfaces or if it seems to be overwhelmed by more horizontal surfaces. The reason for this is because you don't want your DVD rack to interrupt the flow of a rooms warmth, décor, or general feeling. So, once you have determined whether your home theater furniture is either vertical or horizontal dominated, you will have two choices to make. If your home is dominated by a lot of vertical standing surfaces, you will want your DVD racks to be oriented in the exact same way to maintain a solid look and flow in the room. If your furniture seems to be mostly horizontal in it's orientation, than you have a bit of freedom to select to have your DVD storage rack be in either a vertical or horizontal positions since horizontal surfaces are much more forgiving in how they interact with other shapes in the room.

So let's get down to the business of talking about spacing and it's affect on the appearance of your room and furniture overall. Since most people get a DVD rack to help them organize their digital media collection you will want to use one in the way which best suits this purpose. Fortunately there is a large body of professional interior designers out there that have conducted a large amount of research to determine what the best spacing is to accomplish this. The best part is that what they found is actually very easy to achieve in most cases.

The great advantage here for us is that we can use the information that others have already found from the studies they conducted to benefit our home improvement projects. The rules they established are very basic. If you are going to be using vertically aligned DVD storage racks, you will want to leave about 4 inches in between the widest point of either DVD rack. That means that if the movies extend past the width of the rack, than you will make that 4 inch measurement from the end of the DVD case itself and not the rack. When it comes to horizontally aligned DVD storage racks, about 10 inches in between the racks is considered the ideal distance. So now you should know what you need to to get started on your new home improvement project.
